Private Instruction

A Meditative, Compelling Approach

The advantages of private yoga instruction include increased attention to your special needs, and enhanced calm. The development of physical flexibility, supported by deep breathing, mental focus, proper alignment, strength, and healthful visualizations encourage a positive outlook.

Yoga for People of All Ages and Fitness Levels

People of every age and degree of health can benefit from private yoga instruction, which modifies to the level and specific needs of the practitioner. Portia's 15 years of teaching experience give her skills to evaluate and offer a program just for you.

Prenatal Yoga

The practice of yoga during pregnancy is perhaps the most helpful exercise a woman with child can undertake. It is slow, strong and gentle. It prepares the woman's body and breath to open as it will need to open during labor and childbirth. Yogic techniques of breath, movement, sound and visualization provide a confident basis for smooth passage through this most powerful of life experiences. All exercises are modified for safety through to term.

Postnatal Yoga

The time after giving birth is one of sea change. Private or semi-private yoga instruction in your home will help you return your body to a state of ease and comfort. Mother-baby partner exercises will bond and delight you both.

Yoga to Inspire the Mature Body

At age 49, Portia is aware of how the body can change over time into a state of slow grace when nurtured through the age-appropriate practice of yoga. Her teaching reflects years of observation of her own body and those of her many students.

"...Portia Brockway, owner of Yoga in Harvard Square, a studio housed in the University Lutheran Church, goes to people's homes to teach one-off 'yoga parties,' as she calls them. Her clients will have a yoga class, says Brockway, then 'go drink their wine, have their dinner -- whatever they want.'

There are no statistics to measure the number of people engaging in this trend, but, Brockway, who's been teaching yoga since 1993, says, 'It's gotten more popular in the past two or three years.' "
