Your Life is In Your Hands:
A Workshop with Portia Brockway
The practice of mudras (auspicious hand positions) is coupled here with corresponding yoga poses, breathing exercises, chants, and chakra visualizations to develop a subtle state of balance. These creative hand positions are practiced to seal our vital energies, which in turn helps us to transmute toxicity into the delight of pure awareness. Practitioners of mudra yoga accumulate kundalini energy up along the spine, wheeling us forward into expanding circles of satchidananda: "awareness, knowledge, bliss". The expressive tool of mudra has been used since ancient times, perhaps familiar from Indian dance. Related philosophical principles will be offered. Suitable for all ages, people with limited mobility may join to practice the mudras, chants and breathing techniques while seated in chairs.
Portia Brockway is in her fourteenth year as owner/instructor of Yoga in Harvard Square. She is certified through the Kripalu Center, and registered with the National Yoga Alliance at the senior 500-hour level. Portia is a Cantabrigian of 25 years, born and raised in Darien, Connecticut, with a Quaker education. She is linked through her American father into the tradition of Sri Ramakrishna (1836-86).
